This Black Velvet Cake is a rich, dark twist on the classic red velvet, made with deep cocoa flavors and a hint of buttermilk for moistness. The soft, velvety layers are complemented by a creamy cream cheese frosting, creating a stunning and decadent dessert.
Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Black Velvet Cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
¾ cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
½ cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 cup hot water (or hot coffee for enhanced chocolate flavor)
For the Cream Cheese Frosting:
8 oz cream cheese, softened
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
3 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk (optional, for consistency)
Directions:
Prepare the Cake Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Mix Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, combine the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth. Stir in the hot water (or coffee) until the batter is well combined; it will be thin.
Bake the Cakes: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Make the Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until smooth. Add heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches a spreadable consistency.
Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake. Smooth with an offset spatula and garnish as desired.
